Equipment was packed away for Christmas on Friday as work was suspended on the High Street repaving project.
The Royal Borough wants to encourage trade during retailers' busiest time of the year and hopes a clear street will make the town centre a more appealing place to be.
It said last week that it would be 'pulling out all the stops' to attract shoppers.
A promotion offering free parking at weekends also began on Saturday.
Contractor Murrill Construction Ltd will return to finish the £200,000 scheme, which runs between Costa Coffee and Queen Street, from Monday, January 13.
