Controversial planning permission for Sonning's August Field

A controversial grant of planning permission has brought an end to a battle which has been raging for years in Sonning.

The site at August Field in Charvil Lane, has seen numerous planning applications refused and subsequent appeals dismissed since 2006.

At a planning meeting on July 24, permission was granted for Alfred Homes Ltd to demolish the existing dwelling and replace it with four houses, despite seven letters of objection.

Pat Doyle, chairman of Sonning Parish Council, said: “This is a big set back and will be damaging for Sonning.”

Elaine Herdman, a Charvil Lane neighbour, said: “It’s really disappointing.”

The report from Wokingham Borough Council’s development management service found that the development would not ‘materially impact on the character’ of the village or the Sonning Conservation Area.

Mr Doyle said: “This will set a precedent and should never have happened.

“We will continue fighting against any future expansions.”
