A new mayor received the Royal Borough's mace, seal and keys in Maidenhead Town Hall on Tuesday.
Cllr Andrew Jenner (Con, Maidenhead Riverside) and his wife Julia began their year in office at the formal mayor making ceremony.
But Cllr Jenner, who has dual British and Australian nationality, made sure the proceedings were not allowed to become too formal.
Announcing that he had been impressed by his mayoral predecessor Colin Rayner's trademark bowler hat, he produced his own headgear from a bag - an Australian style hat complete with hanging corks. It got a big laugh during the few seconds he wore it with his mayoral robes.
The new mayor is a father-of-three with his own family business, as well a senior magistrate and past president of Maidenhead Chamber of Commerce.
The new deputy mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead is Cllr John Lenton (Con, Horton and Wraysbury). His wife Margaret Lenton, former headteacher of Slough Grammar School and current vice-chairman of Wraysbury Parish Council will be deputy mayoress.
