The future of Holyport Real Tennis Club is in doubt after it emerged it is in the process of being sold to a developer.
The Grade II listed building is home to about 170 members who may face having to find a new home to play the racquet sport.
Manger and head coach at the club, Chris Bray, learnt the owner was in discussion with an unknown developer to sell the site about three weeks ago.
"It would be a crying shame if we closed," said Chris, who has been at the Holyport Street club for two years.
"We are just keeping our fingers crossed that we can keep the club open for real tennis."
Royal Borough councillors who represent Bray Ward are also racing to save the sporting venue as they attempt to have the building listed as a community asset.
If successful it would mean villagers would be able to purchase the building and guarantee the future of the club.
But Cllr David Coppinger (Con, Bray) said it might be too late depending on how far negotiations have progressed over the sale of the site.
