A pair of thieves used a traffic cone to smash into a newsagents in Maidenhead in the early hours of yesterday and took more than £1,000 worth of cigarettes and cash.
The burglars broke through the glass on the door of the 'am 2 pm' shop in Gloucester Road at about 2.20am, setting off an alarm and waking owner Kularatham Satha and wife Pama, who live above the shop.
Mr Satha went downstairs and found a pair of young men, wearing white and pink jackets, loading the cigarettes, money from a change box and Mrs Satha's mobile phone into a yellow bag.
The pair ran away when they were disturbed and before the police arrived.
Mrs Satha said: "This is the first time there has been a problem like this in six years here. There are nice people in a nice area here."
