Always greeting the world with a smile is the secret to a long and happy life, according to a Windsor resident who celebrated her 100th birthday last week, writes Jess Hurst.

Margaret Lawrence marked the occasion with a birthday cake, balloon, and banners in her care home Mountbatten Grange.

She attributed reaching her centenary to her personal mantra to ‘always put your shoulders back, stand tall and smile.’

Margaret was born on July 21, 1923 – and in the course of her life had three children with her husband, John Edward, to whom she was married for 40 years.

She now has five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandson.

She taught in her local Sunday school and was involved in Girl Guides. She is referred to as a ‘surrogate mum’ by many who know her.

The staff at Mountbatten Grange decorated the home with balloons and banners and even made her a birthday cake to celebrate her very impressive birthday.
