Windsor RFC win title despite loss to local rivals Marlow

Marlow gained revenge on Windsor for their earlier season loss at Home Park, but couldn’t quite spoil Anthony Andrews’ side’s title party.

The home side dealt Windsor only a fourth defeat of the Southern Counties North campaign, beating them 28-25 at Riverwoods.

But a single point was all Windsor needed to wrap up the championship and the four tries they scored ensured they came away with two bonus points.

Victory also sees them promoted back to South West 1 East next season. They’ll conclude their campaign at home to Aylesbury RFC on Saturday. A second try from Allen Crawshaw put Windsor 18-13 to the good in the second half before the home side came back to clinch an exciting win.

“It was a bit strange celebrating after a loss to be honest,” said Andrews.

“We knew a point would be enough to win the league but we didn't set out to do that. I think ill-discipline cost us in the end. It was great to get the point but there were a few mixed emotions at the end.

“We're in a place now that we can go out and finish the season on a high.

“It will be good to enjoy promotion and we look forward to playing level six rugby next season.”

Windsor’s closest challengers Buckingham did all they could to stay above Marlow in the race for second place, thumping Slough 45-17 away. The focus now switches to the battle between the two for a play-off spot.  Rory Greenslade-Jones’ side host Reading at Riverwoods on Saturday before completing their campaign at High Wycombe on April 20.

Marlow’s director of rugby James McKillop said: “Yes, it’s bitter-sweet as we didn't manage to get a bonus point.

“It shows we deserve to be competing with these top sides. It was a great game for the neutrals but we collected a few injures unfortunately.

“We’re now focused on Reading next week and still aiming for the play-off place. The boys are full of confidence but hopefully not complacent as we’ve still got a couple of tough games to go.”
