Thousands raised for project to create a new skatepark in Twyford

Thousands of pounds have been raised so far towards a project to deliver a new skatepark at a recreation ground in Twyford.

The current skatepark in King George V Recreation Ground was built almost 20 years ago and the parish council is now looking to upgrade the space to provide a new facility for the community.

The Twyford Skatepark Project was initiated last year with the aim of providing a new facility for wheeled sports in Twyford.

The project started after the parish council received emails from skaters in the area saying they would be ‘really keen’ to have a new skatepark.

“Although it [the current skatepark] is passing the annual risk assessment, we knew that the skatepark only has a limited amount of time left,” Twyford parish council clerk Lucy Moffatt explained.

“So, at some point in the future, it would either have to be decommissioned or we’d need a new skatepark.”

The parish council then set up a working group for the project and has been working with the community and local skaters on the plans.

After asking contractors to submit bids to work on the project, the parish council awarded the tender to Maverick Industries, a company specialising in the design and installation of spray concrete skateparks.

The company has been working with users of the current skatepark to discuss what features they would like included in the designs.

“It really is a bespoke design for Twyford and I think that’s what’s so exciting about this project, that the design is driven by the users,” Lucy added.

The parish council has underwritten funds for the construction of the new skatepark which is budgeted to be £200,000.

This means that if the parish council receives grants towards the project, it may not need to put in the whole £200,000, but if grants are not provided, the council is still committed to delivering a new skatepark.

As part of the discussions, skaters have also asked if benches, etiquette boards outlining the rules and regulations, bins and a tool station to fix skateboards and scooters could be added.

To fund these additions, the parish council has been working with the Friends of Twyford Skatepark to set up a crowdfunder, which has raised more than £11,300 so far.

Martin Alder, chairman of Twyford Parish Council, said: “The support for the skatepark project has been beyond our wildest expectations.

"The response to the crowdfunder has been nothing short of fantastic, with the community rallying together to make this vision a reality.

“We are incredibly grateful for everyone’s contributions and enthusiasm.

“This project is a true testament to what we can achieve when we work together, and we’re excited to see it come to life."

Wheeled sports were showcased at the Twyford Village Fete at the weekend and £260 was donated towards the Twyford Skatepark Project.

An additional £90 was also raised through a game by Bulldog Twyford at the event.

Following discussions on the initial designs, Maverick Industries will present its adjusted designs at a working group meeting in September.

Lucy said there are hopes to have designs and permissions in place to start the build before Christmas or if not, prior to spring next year.
