Maidenhead United’s Sam Barratt and Gemma Harvey were the lucky recipients of awards at the Berkshire Football Awards, hosted at the packed Double-Barrelled Brewery in Reading on Wednesday last week.

The evening was hosted by Sky Sports presenter Tom White and teams and individuals across our area picked up honours.

They included Sam Barratt, whose fantastic volley against former league side Torquay United won 'Goal of the Season', while Gemma Harvey was named as the 'Young Player of the Season (Female)'. Barratt's prize was collected by Magpies' club secretary Neil Maskell.

Alfonso Tenconi was named the ‘Young Player of the Season (Male)’ for his efforts after breaking into the Slough Town first team from the u23s Academy.

The event was established by Football in Berkshire to celebrate the great and the good from the local non-league game, from the semi-professional teams to the grassroots game as well as the players, coaches, managers, supporters and volunteers who make such a vital contribution.

With that in mind, the 'Supporter of the Season' award went to Windsor fan Ian Dawson, who gave a wonderful speech about his experience following the Royalists to all of their matches last season.

The final award of the night, the ‘Darrell Freeland Award for Service to the Local Game’, was won by Binfield FC chairman Bob Bacon.

“What a night – 150 of Berkshire’s best local football people in one room,” said Tom Canning (Football in Berkshire).

“We organised a p*** up in a brewery. It was a brilliant evening celebrating them and everyone else who was nominated.

“Thanks, in no small part, to Abi Ticehurst who did a lot of the techincal prep, but also Eddie Stobart and our sponsors who ensured everything went smoothly.

“In terms of winners, I know it was a close call for women’s player of the season between Alicia Povey and Nicole Barrett while I thought Gemma Harvey was a very deserving winner in the young player category.

“Final word though to Sam Barratt – as he often is, sunning himself somewhere hot, but that goal was worthy of winning several competitions and we look forward to more from him next year.”
