Slough Town have 'a spring in their step' approaching Concord Rangers clash

Slough Town FC have gone through this week with 'a spring in their step' according to manager Jon Underwood, after the side chalked up their second and third wins of the National League South season within four days.

Havant & Waterlooville were first stunned by Slough at the weekend, the Hawks losing 2-1 on home turf, before Underwood and Neil Baker’s side recorded a 2-0 victory on Tuesday evening against Bath City at Arbour Park.

Freddie Grant and Aaron Kuhl got themselves on the scoresheet against the Hawks with the latter scoring from the penalty spot.

Alfonso Tenconi and an own goal from Joe Raynes ensured the Rebels conquered the Romans.

Underwood believes these were ‘much needed’ but ‘thoroughly deserved’ results for his side who climb to 15th in the table and currently have the sweet optimism they can make it three out of three when they face Concord Rangers today (Saturday).

“A week ago, we were saying how we just needed a win. Now, we have picked up six points in four days,” said Underwood.

“We thought we were going to have another tough game on Saturday at Havant and Waterlooville where no one gives you a chance.

“You expect to go there and come away beaten, but our players have dug in and got the win. That changed everything.

“The lads turned up on Tuesday with more belief and more confidence, and we’ve managed to get another victory.

“It’s not like we nicked either aswell – we were the better side in both games and thoroughly deserved the points.

“It’s made such a difference. The players have had a spring in their step this week, there will be smiles on everyone’s faces in training, and you soon forget what it’s like to lose games.”

Slough Town had endured a streak of seven games without a league win prior to their success at Westleigh Park, their only victory chalked up on the opening day of the campaign.

It was a miserable run which sowed a seed of doubt in the minds of the Rebels’ management team, Underwood admitted to the Express.

“The longer that went on, the harder it felt to win a game,” he said.

“Neil and I do believe in ourselves and our ability but when you have a run like that, you wonder when you are going to turn it around.

“You do question yourself often and you do doubt things, and I think that is only natural.

“We had a conversation with the four board members last week about how things are going and what our plans were.

“They were just so supportive and said that they fully believe we were the two people to turn things around.

“It was nice to hear that going into the Havant game.”

Underwood added: “The expectation from the fans going into this Saturday is ‘we’ve beaten Havant, and we’ve beaten Bath, so we must beat Concord’.

“Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that and we’ve got to remain realistic.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard over the past week, and we have to try and put that effort in every week. If we do, I think we will win more than we lose this season.

“Concord will be looking to beat us having seen our recent results. But we are in a much better place now, so we are feeling optimistic.”
