Alan Massey: 'My team need to have a good long look at themselves'

Maidenhead United captain Alan Massey said his team need to have ‘a good long look at themselves’ after they conceded four goals in 45 minutes against Torquay United on Saturday.

Armani Little (two), Asa Hall, and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans were all on target for the Gulls while the Magpies struggled to get a grip on the match beyond the opening 10 minutes at York Road.

They did improve after the interval – in both attack and defence – but it only papered over the cracks of a dire first half, according to the Magpies skipper, who halved the deficit after Remy Clerima got the home side firing.

“I think the second half papers over the first really,” said Massey.

“It was nowhere near good enough. I think everyone that was involved in the first half needs to have a good long look at themselves because that is nowhere near what we should be doing this season.

“We didn’t start the game too badly but then we folded. To go 4-0 down at half-time is unacceptable. At any stage in the season, it’s unacceptable to be losing like that at the break.

“The boys showed some character in the second half to get back into it but there are a lot of things that need to be worked on.”

“We’ve got over a week off now, where we can get on the training pitch and work hard,” added Massey.

“We can get our fitness levels up and go through a few things with the management team to be ready to go again down here in 10 days time.”

On his individual performance Massey said: “You always enjoy scoring but maybe not in that situation.

“My main job is to defend, and to concede four isn’t good enough from me or anyone else. That’s where I need to be looking rather than the goal I’ve scored.”
