Rugby returns to Braywick Park with touch 10s tournament

Full contact rugby may not be back at Braywick Park quite yet but a 10s touch tournament this weekend will bring with it a little sense of normality for Maidenhead RFC.

Having not played since Barnstaple back in March, Maids are still waiting to return to the field competively with hopes set on an early November comeback, as rugby works its way through progress stages from A to F.

But to whet their appetite before then, Braywick Park will play host to a mini touch tournament with Windsor and Tring on Saturday at 2pm.

A total of five teams will compete: Maidenhead and Tring A and B, and one side from Windsor.

The bar will be open and spectators welcome for an event Maids’ director of rugby Myke Parrott says will give ‘the lads a bit of a run around’.

England World Cup winner Will Greenwood will also be returning to Braywick and taking part for Maidenhead.

The event falls just before an expected tightening of social gatherings from Monday, but Myke reassured that the occasion will conform to safety rules, with precautions such as social distancing, hand washing and temperature checking in place.

“It is nothing too serious. I am sure there will be some of our lads sneaking in a few pints, we just want the boys to have fun and we hope our opposition do, too,” he said.

“As a non-professional club we are still just playing touch [rugby]. The lack of progression is frustrating but at least there is progression. We have got to be patient.”

Myke added that the feeling around Braywick Park is a good one despite the huge break in competitve rugby.

“I am very optimistic all the time, I think we are in a great place, we have had some fantastic new players join us,” he said.

“There is a great atmosphere around at the moment. Some good additions to the backroom staff.

“I think we are in a great space, we just want the rugby.”
