John 'The Don' Brennan left frustrated in York Hall draw

John Brennan was left frustrated by the referee’s scorecard after his Super welterweight Southern Area Title fight against Sean Robinson ended in a 95-95 points draw.

The Slough boxer felt like he had done enough to secure the victory with an impressive performance but referee Kieran McCann scored it level.

“Yeah the fight was a good one for the spectators,” said Brennan.

“It was a decent fight the only problem was the end result.

“In my mind I felt that I had done enough for the win – there wasn’t anyone who thought it was tied.

“Even unbiased people were saying that it shouldn’t have been a tie. Some people scored it six rounds to four, in the 10 round fight and some even said as much as eight rounds.”

The 33-year-old looked sharp out of the blocks in the early rounds and after a first round that saw both competitors get their eye in; it was Brennan who pushed the tempo in the second, forcing Robinson onto the ropes more than once, before leaving the champion on wobbly legs with a big right hand in the third.

A comeback from Robinson in the middle rounds kept Brennan on his toes, but The Don looked full of energy in the later rounds.

“I’m happy with my performance,” added Brennan.

“I had a chat with Gary my trainer and it went the way we wanted it to.

“I started strong, won the first 4/5 rounds – then the middle rounds – I don’t know maybe it was a lapse in concentration or I was waiting for my second wind. He was an in-out boxer, like an amateur’s style, jumping in getting points.

“The last few rounds I was chasing him around and he was just holding.”

Brennan is leaving his options open following the fight, after news that a rematch was off the cards due to Robinson vacating the title.

Brennan confirmed he could challenge for the vacated championship but also added that ‘there are other avenues to explore.’
