Slough Town saw off the dogged resistance of Welling United with a late goal from Wiktor Makowski last night (Tuesday) to progress to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup and an away tie with Bedfont Sports.
Having been held to a 1-1 draw by the Isthmian League Premier Division side at Park View Road on Saturday, the two sides met again at Arbour Park in last night’s replay, with Makowski’s 79th minute winner settling the contest in Slough’s favour.
Welling put up a spirited show against a much-changed Rebels line-up but were up against it from the moment Scott Simmons was sent off in the seventh minute following a poor challenge on Scott Davies.

Davies made two changes to his side from Saturday’s draw, with Tyrese Dyce and Jaiden Drakes-Thomas replaced by Dan Roth and Henry Ochieng. The Rebels also had significant EDS representation on the bench with Jaye Long, Pedro Sami, Henry Upstell and Kobie Hines-Leacock among the substitutes.
It took the Rebels until the 79th minute to break the deadlock, however, they could well have taken the lead inside five minutes when Makowski was played through on goal. His first touch narrowed the angle, though and the former Flackwell striker fired into the side-netting under pressure.
Welling then saw Simmons sent off in the seventh minute, but if anything, this increased their resolve to thwart and frustrate their hosts. Their stubborn defensive performance was very nearly rewarded in the 37th minute when Tom Leahy lofted a decent chance over the bar.
Tyrique Clarke was able to force an excellent save from keeper Freddie Norman with a half-volleyed attempt five minutes before the break, but the two teams were still deadlocked at the interval.
Into the second half and the 11 men began to step up their efforts. Josh Adepoju saw a strike pushed away by Norman at his near post in the 49th minute and the keeper then thwarted Johnny Goddard in the 64th minute after more good work from Clarke.
The goal Arbour Park was waiting for finally arrived in the 79th minute when Goddard’s slick pass through the lines was picked up by Anyanwu who calmly rolled the ball across the six-yard box for Makowski to force home.
The Rebels might have added a second in the closing stages with efforts from distance by Goddard and Clarke, but one goal was enough to see them past difficult and stubborn opponents.
They’ll now visit Bedfont Sports of the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday, September 27 (3pm kick-off).
Bedfont - currently 15th in their league - edged out Hanwell Town 1-0 away from home in the second qualifying round on Saturday.
After the game, Davies posted: “No doubt about it, two extremely tough games.
“Being down to the bare bones, last night was all about getting through and thankfully we managed to find a way.
“Some top performances, especially from some of our young lads. Onto Bedfont away.”
Scott Davies spoke with Connor McNeish after last night's win against Welling United at Arbour Park, which sets up an #EmiratesFACup Third Round Qualifying tie at @BSFC_Official later this month.#OneSlough
