Slough Town 2, Hampton & Richmond Borough 1
Slough Town's management team admitted the Rebels were far from their best in Saturday's home game against Hampton & Richmond Borough, but they came from behind in the latter stages to win the match 2-1.
The Rebels came into the game off the back of a bruising 5-1 defeat at Bath City, a game where they played much better than the score line suggests, however, the hangover from it appeared to persist as Stefan Ilic fired the Beavers in front from close range in the 72nd minute. However, displayed the character they showed in their come-from-behind win at Dulwich Hamlet, Slough hit back with goals from George Wells and Imran Kayani to seal their third league win of the season. Wells rose well to head home James Dobson's corner in the 80th minute, and then turned provider for Kayani, flicking the ball over for the substitute to head home a 90th minute winner. Wells was later named man of the match on his 150th appearance for the Rebels while it was also a milestone occasion for George Hunt who played his 50th match for the club.
Perhaps not surprisingly after last weekend's error-strewn display against Bath, Slough started a little uncertainly. Jake Gray created a good chance for Ruaridh Donaldson in the 14th minute, but he flicked the ball just wide of Rhys Forster's goal. The visitors then created the game's first real clear-cut chance in the 35th minute, when Ilic drove through the Rebels' midfield and slipped the ball through to Tommy Wood who fired wide.
Forster made a stunning save to deny Woods an opener in the 60th minute, tipping his firm header over with his fingertips, while Slough's best chance came from a Dobson free kick that bounced away to safety off the outside of the post in the 63rd minute.
The wakeup call for Slough arrived in the 72nd minute when Ilic finished from close range and they were alert enough to take their chances with former Maidenhead United defender, Wells, instrumental in both. The result takes Slough up to 12th on 10 points ahead of Saturday's trip to 16th placed Dover Athletic.
Neil Baker tweeted afterwards: “ Football is a funny old game. Played well on Monday and got smashed 5-1, and bang average today and won the game 2-1 with two set pieces.
“Not a great spectacle and apologies but sometimes football works like that! Still an important three points. Now to celebrate my birthday weekend.”
Jon Underwood added: “Funny game football. Have to say it as I see it and we were so much better in our 5-1 defeat at Bath than we were in our win today.
“Any win in this league should be celebrated though and that’s what I’m about to do with birthday boy Neil Baker.”
