Lambert set for Great Britain return at European Rowing Championships after putting injury problems behind him

Maidenhead's Peter Lambert is set to compete for Great Britain this week after a back injury prevented him from getting into a boat during the 2018 season. Lambert will be joined in the men's quad in the European Rowing Championships in Lucerne by Jack Beaumont - another Maidonian to suffer a major injury setback in the past few years - Jonny Walton and Angus Groom.

Lambert hasn't featured for Great Britain since sustaining a back injury on the start line of the 2017 World Rowing Championships final. The quad team experienced a mixed 2018, winning the yellow jersey for the World Rowing Cup series but failing to make the A final at the World Rowing Championships.

Lambert is determined for the team to find the consistency that was missing last summer.

He said: "The 2018 racing season was a bit frustrating, not just for the quad but for the men’s sculling squad as a whole. There were moments when everything went exactly to plan and the boats were moving really well and then other times when the speed just wasn’t there.

“It was hard to watch this happen from the side-line but it provided me with the motivation to push through rehab and get ready for this season. We’ve had another long winter of training and, as a group of athletes and coaches, have looked closely at why things didn’t always go to plan last year but also reflect on the moments that did.

“Expectations on GB boats are always high, but we welcome the challenge and feel like, as a crew, we have got something to prove again. As a group of athletes and friends, we are as close as we have ever been and there is a fire in our bellies to get racing again.” Also set to represent GB at the championships in Switzerland from Friday until Sunday is Marlow's Rory Gibbs and Windsor's Oliver Cook, both in the men's fours team coached by Chrisian Felkel. The University of London BC rower Matilda Horn, also from Windsor, has been selected in the Women's Eight while Gemma Hall from Wargrave is named as one of three spares for the women's team.
