GB International Andy Houghton.

Maidenhead Rowing Club held a naming ceremony for its two new adaptive rowing boats on Saturday.

Club captain Keith Abbott welcomed guests and members, including the Royal Borough Mayor Paul Lion. GB para rower Andy Houghton also attended.

The boats – which were bought through charitable grants – were christened Rigel and Betelgeuse.

Nick Steel, Adaptive Rowing coach, said “The club launched its Adaptive (Para) rowing project last year, with the aim of getting more people onto the water, to enjoy the sport of rowing, support health and well being, and to develop new friendships. We are extremely grateful to the Shanly Foundation and the Peter Harrison Foundation for their generous donations that have enabled us to purchase these boats to help realize our ambition to expand our rowing capability”.
