1975: The Republic of Ireland football team stayed at Walton Cottage Hotel while they trained at Bisham Abbey in preparation for fixtures against Switzerland and Russia.

Led by player-manager and Leeds United star Johnny Giles, the team stayed for three nights before leaving for Dublin.

1985: About 70 walkers including the mayor, Frank Robinson, took part in a ramble from Cookham to Bray along the Green Way.

The walk was the final event in the Environment Week programme organised by Maidenhead Civic Society.

1990: Jean Wheeler, from Cox Green, celebrated 30 years’ service at the Maidenhead branch of Boots.

She was presented with a bottle of champagne and a large bouquet of flowers by the store manager, Roy Gardiner, following a tea party with some of her former colleagues.

1990: Desborough old boys gathered for a very special David Roberts Memorial Concert at the school.

The concert assembled a group of ex-Desborough pupils who had taken a leading part in the musical life of the school, with a number of them going on to become professional musicians.

1995: Celebrations took place to mark the completion of a project to improve play areas at five Maidenhead primary schools.

The £30,000 project, carried out by Groundwork Colne Valley and Hitachi Europe Charitable Trust, led to improvements at St Luke’s Primary School, Larchfield Primary School, Lowbrook Primary School, White Waltham School and Bisham Primary School.

1995: More than 2,000 people congregated on the old cricket common in Cookham Dean for a giant village tea party to commemorate and celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE Day.

Believed to be the biggest get-together in the history of the Dean, the four-hour event featured nostalgic music and memorabilia. Many visitors entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in 1940s-style outfits.

2000: Canadian-born Hugh Sloan, the sole survivor of a tragic wartime bomber crash, was in Maidenhead to talk to girls at Newlands School.

Mr Sloan was the rear gunner on a Halifax plane which exploded in mid-air and plunged into Carpenters Wood in Burchetts Green on July 18, 1944.

The Newlands pupils were studying the Second World War for their GCSE history exam and were due to visit the crash site in the summer.
