King gets back on track after mechanical to claim sixth race win of season in Porsche Carrera Cup

Holyport’s Harry King overcame an unfortunate mechanical in his first race at Knockhill this weekend to then produce one of the best drives of his career in the Porsche Carrera Cup.

The 19-year-old Porsche UK Junior driver showed why he’s sitting top of the driver’s championship in his rookie season as he dealt with the adversity of a retirement in his first race to win the second race from the back of the grid.

That win was King’s sixth of the season and moves him 17 points clear of closest rival Josh Webster ahead of the next round at Thruxton this month.

His Team Parker Racing car was once again quickest in pre-event testing and qualifying, and King was in the process of building a healthy lead in race one when a loose stone damaged the rear of his vehicle and led to a coolant leak, forcing his retirement after only seven laps.

Starting from the rear of the field in race two King had his work cut out to try and claim a podium, but once again he showed unrivalled pace, and excellent racing nous, to scythe through the field for victory. He passed Webster at the midpoint before eating up the five second deficit to leader Scott McKenna, forcing him into a mistake on the final lap to take the chequered flag.

“We had so much pace in the first race but then we had a coolant leak caused by a stone that forced me to retire,” he said. “It’s a real shame that it put a stop to my record-breaking start to the year as the car was absolutely brilliant and I was building a good lead out front.

“It also meant that there was more work to do in race two at a circuit where overtaking is really difficult. But that is racing and one of those things that can happen.

“I didn’t have many expectations from 10th on the grid for race two and I knew it would be tough. However, to come through and win was the best way to bounce back and credit to the team for giving me a fantastic car. I worked hard to pick my way through and then set my sights on Scott when I got to second. There was a lot of work to do, but I could see the gap coming down and started to think that the win could be on, so I had to dip deep and forced him into an error. It was a great way to reward the team for their hard work and I’m over the moon to have taken the win.”
