A sailor from Iver has been presented with one of the Royal Yachting Association’s most prestigious awards in recognition of his commitment to Datchet Water Sailing Club.
David Tugwell was nominated for an outstanding contribution award by the club and selected as a winner by the RYA honours and awards panel.
He will be presented with the award by HRH the Princess Royal, president of the RYA, in London on Friday (November 22).
The boating national governing body volunteer awards are considered the ‘MBE’s’ of the sport. David has been a member of Datchet Water Sailing Club for 26 years and sits on the club’s management team.
He has been key to the club’s sustainability project which began in 2012 when the boilers were replaced with a solar panel system using reservoir water and heat pump. He led a huge effort to raise money for the club, designed the operating systems and supervised the installation.
David also supported activities which led to the club receiving the Mirrors Green Club of the Year Award in 2017.
David said: “Much of what I do is behind the scenes and would not normally be noticed, so it is very special to receive this award.
“The club management have been very supportive in facilitating the green initiatives and helping overcome many hurdles to reduce our carbon footprint by huge percentages.”
