Castle Royle compete against the cream of Europe at the European Men's Club trophy in France

Castle Royle’s Nick Scrutton, David Langley and Tim Shin competed with the cream of Europe to finish fourth in the European Men’s Club trophy in France last week.

The Castle Royle golfers were representing England, having been successful in the champion club event in Huddersfield in September. The competition took place in Bordeaux’s Gold du Medoc resort on Les Chateaux course.

The field included some of the best amateur golfers on the continent. The trio actually went into the final day’s play leading, but sadly the English champions were overhauled by three teams, including the eventual winners Racing Club de France Le Boulie. It was the French club’s sixth victory in the event.

Their star man was Frederic Lacroix, whose four-under-par round of 67 included five birdies in six holes on the back nine.

His team won by three shots with 14-under-par. Danish team Gyttegaard were three shots back in second.

Spanish club RCG El Prat briefly took the lead in round three but were forced to settle for third place on eight-under par.

Castle Royle finished up on six-under-par but can take enormous credit from a competition they led for the best part of 45 holes, only to fall short on the final afternoon.

Nick Taylor, from Castle Royle Golf Club, said: “To finish fourth in Europe against the very best amateur players is a fantastic achievement and one which they should all be very proud of.

“A special mention to Harrison Arnold, who helped the side win the England Champion Club competition, but had to miss the club final as he was away in Minnesota looking at his new college where he’s earned a golf scholarship.

“The team returned to the club on Sunday afternoon and received an incredible welcome from the members of Castle Royle who were attending the club’s presentation day.”
