Castle Royle Golf Club's Cara Gainer celebrated her decision to become a full-time golfer by winning a national title at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.
The 21-year-old player saw off England international Lizzie Prior 3&2 in a tense final of the English Women's Open Match Play Championships.
“I’m in a bit of a dream, it’s crazy,” said Gainer, who has opted to play golf full-time after completing her geography degree at Cardiff University.
“It consolidates my view that I want to give golf a go. I’ve played this great golf in an intense period of time in this crazy heat and against some top players and I’ve come through on top. I’m so pleased, really chuffed.”
Gainer has had an impressive few months, winning the Frilford Heath Scratch Salver already and she will complete at the English Women's Amateur Open at Lindrick and the English Stroke Play Championships at Woodhall Spa later in the summer.
After turning for home all square with Prior, Gainer grasped the advantage with a run of birdies from holes 10 to 14 and clinched her win when the par-three 16th hole was shared.
“It was a bit tense for the first few holes but then I settled into it and rolled in some really nice putts,” said Gainer.
