The Post Office has said there has been a ‘large amount of interest’ in finding a new home for the service amid mounting calls to retain a Maidenhead town centre branch.
In December, concerns were raised that the town centre could be left without its ‘lifeline’ Post Office after the company said that its current branch in TGJones in the Nicholsons Centre would be closing on May 16.
The shopping centre is due to close in June ahead of redevelopment.
The Post Office has been advertising for retailers to apply to run the service and previously said it was ‘investigating the options available’ to keep it in the town.
In its latest update, the company said it had received ‘a large amount of interest from existing retailers in Maidenhead and people who want to start a business in Maidenhead’.
“We know how important a Post Office is to a community, especially a busy town centre branch,” a spokesperson said.
“We will soon be reviewing the applications to determine the best option to maintain service in Maidenhead after the branch inside the TGJones store, closes.
“We are working hard to keep any period of closure to a minimum.”
The update comes after Maidenhead’s MP Josh Reynolds and the Maidenhead Lib Dem group launched a petition on Thursday, January 15 to show ‘just how essential the service is’ and calling for a new location to be found ‘as quickly as possible’.
The petition states: “With the centre due for demolition, the Post Office must relocate by May, leaving thousands, especially older residents, at risk of losing essential face-to-face services.”
Mr Reynolds told the Advertiser: “It was important, I think, that we put something together to be able to show our strength of feeling as a community to having a Post Office in the town centre.
“So, the Post Office know that they need to find somewhere and they can’t get away with closing the Post Office and not providing a replacement.”
Other political groups in Maidenhead have also shown their support for keeping a Post Office in the town centre.
The Royal Borough’s Conservative Group has suggested a civic building could be used for the service.
Leader Sally Coneron said: “We would just like to make the point that this should very easily be reprovisioned either within the town hall or the library.
“They are highly accessible locations and well suited.”
But Mr Reynolds said this option would ‘require funding’ and said he was not aware of ‘any other unitary authorities who run Post Offices’.
Meanwhile, Maidenhead’s Labour Party said it ‘fully supports a town centre Post Office’, but criticised the Lib Dem campaign.
Spokesperson Jo Smith said: “It’s baffling that the local Lib Dems are surprised about the loss of this amenity given that they approved the Nicholsons redevelopment and knew the franchisee would need a new home.”
In response, Mr Reynolds called for parties to ‘rally together rather than trying to be party political’.
The petition had 670 signatures at the time of going to press.
