Supermarket giant Asda has been given permission to sell alcohol 24/7 from a petrol station convenience store in Maidenhead.
The retailer, which owns the Euro Garages site in Windsor Road, required the go-ahead from the council’s licensing team to sell booze to customers.
Alcohol purchased can only be consumed off the premises but the application still attracted an objection from a nearby resident.
Keith Asby told the council’s licensing sub-committee on November 27 he feared the move could lead to people drinking in the petrol station forecourt and on nearby service roads.
He told the meeting: “I know the applicant says nobody drinks in the car park but as a local resident I can say there have been people drinking in the forecourt and they pull out onto the road and drink in the service road.”
Richard Taylor, solicitor for ASDA, told the meeting the retail giant has an ‘unblemished’ record with licensing and said staff are fully trained with Challenge 25 age verification checks in place.
Windsor and Maidenhead council has now confirmed its licensing and public space protection order sub-committee has unanimously agreed for alcohol to be sold from the petrol station convenience store.
The supermarket giant will not be allowed to sell miniature bottles of spirits of 20cl or below, except those contained in pre-packaged gift packs.
All spirits must also be displayed behind the counter.
