Tesco will be opening its new Express store in Maidenhead on Thursday (February 16) at 74 High Street.
This is Tesco’s first presence in town centre since the closure of the Metro store in the Nicholsons Centre in September 2020, a moment that was ‘sad for the town’.
This left the nearest branch located on the A4 Bath Road in Boyn Hill.
The supermarket chain applied for a premises licence to take over the former Monsoon clothing store in August last year.
The unit has been vacant since 2020 when the women’s fashion brand fell into administration.
The new Tesco Express will create 20 new jobs, said the company – and brings with it food bank donations and Tesco’s Community Grants funding opportunities for local good causes.
Sorbon Estates owns the commercial property. Matteo Scabbia, Sorbon Estates’ asset and property manager, said: “We are always looking for a range of retailers to compliment the current mix in Maidenhead, and we look forward to further exciting announcements in the coming months.”
Ben Scott, the new Tesco store’s manager, said: “The store opening will provide a real boost for Maidenhead, helping to employ and train local people, and it’ll be a pleasure to see our colleagues grow and develop.
“We will of course also promote Tesco’s Community Grants scheme, with the aim of donating thousands of pounds for local good causes that can help the community to flourish.”
Community groups in and around Maidenhead are invited to apply for community funding through Community Grants, Tesco’s blue token voting scheme.
This sees three local projects voted on by customers in store every three months, with first place awarded £1,500, second place £1,000 and third place £500.
Organisations can apply for grants at tescoplc.com/sustainability/communities/tesco-community-grants
One of the other Tesco initiatives that will benefit Maidenhead groups is the Community Food Connection scheme, which is dedicated to redistributing surplus food to charities and community groups from every Tesco store at the end of each day.
