Demolition work on the Magnet Leisure Centre is underway, bringing more than 50 years of history to an end.
The site will one day be used for 434 homes after councillors gave the thumbs up to the site in 2021 despite some concerns over the design of the buildings.
Hoardings around the site have been up since October, with the footbridge connecting the Magnet to Hines Meadow car park demolished just before Halloween.
The first phase of the development, which will see 353 homes on the former leisure centre, is expected to take three years.
Following completion of the first, the remaining homes will be built on land which once played host to Tenpin Bowling, providing a total of 434 properties across five buildings.
Plans to build on the site have been fraught with controversy, after the Advertiser revealed that the land value had plummeted by millions back in September.
