The Royal Borough has warned residents about a scam email being circulated.
The borough said a resident was sent an email purporting to be from “The City Council” asking them to share their bank details to receive a refund of overpaid council tax.
The resident was unsure whether the message was genuine and contacted the borough for confirmation.
A spokesman for the Royal Borough said: "We were able to tell them this was a hoax message and are pleased to say that on this occasion no details were handed over.
"We would never email a resident or customer asking for bank details or inform them that they had overpaid in this way. If anyone is in any doubt about correspondence claiming to be from the council we would encourage them to contact us in person or over the phone on 01628 683800."
