Staff say final farewell as Maidenhead Post Office shuts

Despite months of petitions and campaigns, Maidenhead Post Office has finally shut its doors for the last time.

The High Street store, which has faced an uncertain future since January, served its last customer on Wednesday, September 14, ahead of services being moved to WHSmith in the Nicholsons Centre.

The change means that almost a century’s worth of combined experience looks set to disappear, with just one member of staff expected to make the jump to the new franchise.

“For all the staff, it got a bit emotional on the day,” said manager Jay Srikandan, who moved to the UK from Sri Lanka 44 years ago and spent 27 of them working at the Maidenhead branch.

“Some of the customers brought flowers and chocolates and how much they were going to miss us all, but for the office it was business as usual.

“For me it was really sad, it was tough seeing everything getting boarded up.

“Every one of the staff was crying and the morning was really bad for me, but I had to keep showing customers the sign because I just couldn’t talk.”

She added: “I still haven’t quite felt it yet – maybe on Monday morning I will feel it properly – when there’s nothing to come into.”

It was originally announced in January that the future of Maidenhead Post Office had been put up for consultation, along with 42 others nationwide, and a search for a franchise partner was launched shortly after.

At the time, the reasons for the store being included on the list have not been made public, with the Post Office also refusing to comment whether the branch was run at a profit or a loss.

The decision prompted the Advertiser to start a campaign to keep the branch open, which received more than 1,000 declarations of support by the time it was submitted in June.

However, by the end of July the Post Office had confirmed its plans to shut the High Street store and relocate services to WHSmith.
