Mystery over decision to remove councillor from cabinet

Mystery surrounds the decision to remove a long-serving Royal Borough councillor from the cabinet.

When Cllr Simon Dudley (Con, Riverside) unveiled his new team following his takeover as leader in May, Cllr Philip Love (Con, Belmont) was made a deputy member with responsibility for Maidenhead and the town's regeneration.

He was also the leader’s representative on the Partnership for the Regeneration of Maidenhead (PRoM).

However, he has now been replaced by Cllr David Evans (Con, Hurley and Walthams).

No official announcement was made on the decision, but it has been confirmed by several councillors.

Cllr Love declined to comment, except to say it had not been ‘his decision’, while Cllr David Coppinger (Con, Bray), the cabinet’s deputy chairman, said it had been Cllr Dudley’s choice.

Cllr Dudley was not immediately available for comment, but sent a statement saying he sought to have the ‘strongest team on the field for the benefit of residents’ and praising Cllr Evans.
