Simone O'Brien's return to form is a real boost for Maidenhead United Women

Simone O’Brien’s return to form has provided Maidenhead United Women a huge boost ahead of an FA Cup tie against Chesham United.

O’Brien suffered a broken fibula after a freak training injury back in May but scored on her second appearance since returning in a friendly defeat to Hounslow.

Maidenhead were beaten 2-1 but produced a much improved performance after a heavy defeat to QPR in the FA Women’s National League Plate.

O’Brien scored what she described as a wonder goal.

She said: “The ball came over from the right from Nicole. Chrissy got a touch and I said ‘set Chrissy, set me’. She set me, I flicked it up and volleyed it in.”

Although it was a euphoric moment for the returning O’Brien, she is still in recovery from the fracture and admitted to struggling somewhat during the Hounslow game.

However, her pace and goal-scoring knack is a welcome addition to a side looking to rediscover their early-season form.

The Magpies have been defeated in each of their last three competitive fixtures.

O’Brien and her teammates now turn their attention to the FA Cup fixture against divisional and local rivals Chesham.

The Generals sit seven points above Ryan Taylor’s team in the league, but have played two more games.

Chesham triumphed by a goal to nil when the sides last met in August.

Buoyed by the return of O’Brien however, Maidenhead will be hoping for a different outcome.

It’s sure to be an interesting clash on Sunday.
