Maidenhead United bolster defensive options with De Havilland signing

Maidenhead United have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of 26-year-old Will De Havilland.

De Havilland counts Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers amongst his former clubs, and joins the Magpies following a spell with Dover Athletic.

The centre back joined Dover on a two-year deal back in July 2019 having made 42 National League and two FA Cup appearances for Maidstone United the previous season, wearing the captain’s armband on 16 of those occasions.

During his time with the Chairboys, De Havilland spent time on loan at Aldershot Town and Maidstone before making the move to the Gallagher Stadium a permanent one. He has since made more than 100 appearances for National League clubs.

De Havilland becomes the club’s fourth new signing of the summer, following the additions of Kane Ferdinand, Dylan Asonganyi and Emile Acquah, while Sam Barratt has signed a new two-year deal.

Speaking to the club’s media officer Grace Scott this week the central defender said he can’t wait to get going.

“Last season was a bit of an odd one for me,” he said.

“I was at Dover, and we actually got pulled out of the league after 15 games, so it was quite frustrating.

“Dev contacted me towards the end of the season and expressed his interest and I was very keen to get going after being out for so long, having not played since the end of January, so I’m just raring to go.

“My first experience of senior football was at Wycombe, so I think it put me in good stead. I got 20-odd games in League 2 and then went on loan in this league and have then stayed in this league for the last three or four years. So, I’ve got plenty of experience in this league and I’m looking to kick on now.

“I want to bring my experience, I’m working on my leadership qualities, and I want to bring goals as well. I’ve scored five in my last few seasons, and I want to try and top that this year.

“They (the fans) can expect 100 per cent every time, I’ll put my body on the line, I’ll throw myself in front of shots and I’ll always compete and do everything to win.”
