Maidenhead United fans have had their say on the heritage kits which will be worn from the start of next season, whenever that is.
To celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary the official kit supplier Uhlsport came up with four designs to reflect significant periods or achievements in the club’s history.
Following an online survey Magpies fans have plumped for options B and C.
Option B, which has unanimously been voted for as the designated home kit, has featured heavily in the club’s history. Although many think of Maidenhead United playing in black and white stripes, the club predominantly wore a combination of white shirts and black shorts from the 1930s through to the early 1990s. The inclusion of a Maltese cross is also a nod to the club’s first ever matches in the 1870s. Contemporary newspaper reports from the time described Maidenhead wearing ‘white with a black and green Maltese cross’.
Option C, similar in style to the current Flamengo kit with its red and black hooped shirts paired with white shorts, is a tribute to the trip Maidenhead wore during its first ever FA Cup tie at York Road in 1871, one of the first four ties ever played in the competition. During the club’s 140th season Maidenhead wore a one-off replica of this strip for a commemorative friendly with Oxford University which celebrated the club’s association with the FA Cup from its inauguration.
The club has thanked all supporters who have had their say and the new strips will be unveiled at some stage ahead of the new season.
