Rene Steer felt the Magpies fell below the standards they've set for themselves this season in the 1-0 loss to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
United lost the game to a controversial penalty, awarded after Ryan Upward appeared to handle the ball in the area.
Steer felt that on balance the Magpies deserved at least a draw, but no more after failing to hit the heights of their most recent away displays.
"It’s a tough one, they had chances, we had chances, and I feel we deserved at least a draw but I don't think we deserved to win," he said.
"The penalty is soft but once your hands go up the referee is always 50/50 with (making a decision on) it.
"But it happens and we're going to have other situations like that in the season which we've just got to deal with it. I think he (Upward) got a little push in the back which forced his hands to come up, but we've got to react after that.
"It didn’t fall for us today, but we’ll go again (at Barnet) on Saturday. We've made a good start, but we've set our standards now and we've got to keep to those standards and keep going."
