Maidenhead United manager Alan Devonshire expects to lose ' three or four' players this summer

Alan Devonshire is preparing for another summer of upheaval after admitting that three or four of the club’s best players are likely to leave in the off-season.

Last summer Harry Pritchard, Sam Barratt, Sean Marks, Max Kilman and Jake Goodman all moved on to pastures new and the Magpies’ inability to adequately replace them led to the side’s poor start to the campaign.

This week goalkeeper Carl Pentney became the first of his crop to fly the nest and Devonshire knows there's likely to be plenty of interest in others who've stood out in black and white.

“We’re going to lose three or four players again, without a doubt, because they’ve had good seasons,” said Devonshire after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Chesterfield.

“We’ll just have to wait and see (what happens). Me and the boy will sit down and go through what targets we’ve got. We’re signing someone tomorrow, a young lad who we like (Henry Landers, 18, from North Leigh).

“I've learned some lessons, definitely. In the first half of the season I probably took too long to change things and that won't happen again next year I hope.

“Hopefully we can start well and just go from there.” United made sure of their National League place with three matches to play and finished the campaign sixth from bottom on 54 points.

“Listen, we’ve got faults, but even through the dark days, they (the players) gave me everything,” he added.

“We just weren’t good enough in that time. But look, we changed it, we became a lot more solid and luckily, we’ve reaped the rewards and we’ve done what we set out to do. We’ve had some good results along the way. Some bad ones as well. But that’s going to be us I’m afraid. Second seasons are always the hardest, but, having said that I think the third season might be the hardest! But let’s enjoy it. We’re staying in this league which we wanted to do and let’s see if we can progress.”
