Maidenhead United 1, Wycombe Wanderers 1
Maidenhead United held League 1 side Wycombe Wanderers to a 1-1 draw on Friday as they rounded off an unbeaten pre-season programme in impressive style.
Alan Devonshire’s side will go into their National League curtain raiser against Gateshead on Saturday full of confidence after their competitive display.
They took the lead in the 11th minute when summer signing Max Worsfold whipped in a low cross for Ryan Bird to sweep home.
Gareth Ainsworth’s side grew into the contest as the match wore on, and Magpies’ keeper Carl Pentney twice thwarted Paris Cowan-Hall.
Central defender Ayo Obileye, a summer signing from Eastleigh, tested substitute keeper Ma-Kalambay early in the second half with a deflected effort.
But the visitors stepped up their efforts after the break and, after Sido Jombati nodded the ball onto the post and Adebayo Akinfenwa flicked another effort wide, they levelled through Randell Williams’ scrappy finish in the 72nd minute.
Bird might have doubled his lead in the second half, but could only shoot into the side netting, while Nana Owusu also called Ma Kalambay into action. The final Magpies chance fell for Adrian Clifton, who drove wide after robbing the Wycombe defence of the ball and bearing down on goal.
