Triallists will feature for Maidenhead United at Walton Casuals, says Devonshire

Alan Devonshire will take a team made up mainly of triallists for a friendly with Walton Casuals this evening (Thursday).

Devonshire has got his eyes on a few players who’ve impressed in training but wants to see how they perform in a pre-season match.

None of the triallists have played in the

National League, so they’ll be desperate to impress the former West Ham United player, who has space in his squad for another couple of players.

“We’ve now got a game at Walton Casuals on Thursday,” said Devonshire.

“The team will include a lot of triallists who have been training with us for a week and I need to filter them down.

“A couple of them have impressed, so we’ll see. We’ve got space in the squad for another couple of players.”

Devonshire added: “Things are starting to take shape. They’re fine at the moment but we won’t really know until the games start.

“The pitches will be very, very hard because we’ve had no rain. As you know I’m not really fussed about pre-season. We’re just building up to August 4.”

Maidenhead kicked off their pre-season matches with a behind-closed-doors friendly 4-2 win at Brentford on July 5.

Herson Alves featured for the Magpies, having left the Bees for Berkshire earlier this summer.

The visitors took the lead in the ninth minute through Josh Kelly and Nana Owusu took

advantage of a kind

rebound off the goalkeeper to double their lead on the half-hour.

A Brentford triallist poked the ball home to make it 2-1 before half-time and the hosts levelled things up through Kolbeinn Finnsson’s sweeping finish five minutes after the break.

However, the Magpies restored their lead with 10 minutes to play when James Akintunde charged down the keeper’s clearance and slotted home. Sean McCormack then scored from Adrian Clifton’s pull back three minutes before the end.

There are doubts over whether the Magpies pre-season match at Beaconsfield will take place on Saturday, due

to concerns over the readiness of the pitch.

The Magpies will split the squad to play at Beaconsfield at noon and Windsor at 3pm.

After that the Magpies go to Wealdstone on Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off), Burnham on Saturday week (July 21, noon) and Basingstoke Town (July 21, 3pm).

Their final friendly is at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Friday, July 27 (7.45pm) before the first game of the

National League season at home to Gateshead on Saturday, August 4 (kick-off 3pm).
