Bolton hopes Maidenhead RFC will crack Cleve after opening day defeat

‘Not perfect but with plenty of positives’ was how Russell Bolton described Maidenhead RFC’s first foray into the South West Premier last weekend, a 30-27 defeat away at Camborne.

Maids’ head coach accepted that his emotions were split between being pleased his newly-promoted side were competitive with one which finished third last season and frustration that they were so close to beginning their campaign with a win.

“It’ll take a few weeks before we know whether we are really competitive in this league,” he said.

“We believe we are but it's too early to tell until a few more matches have been played. It was a frustrating result, but at least we came away with two points.”

Bolton thought his side fronted up well in the match, which saw Perry Jansen score two tries, and Will Cadden and Ed Keohane bag one apiece, and it was only in the middle period that their standards slipped.

“We started well, were physical and took a 15-10 lead into half-time. We wanted to be physical and put our stamp on the match, which we did.

“We also had to contend with a vocal crowd, which was interesting, and I thought we did that also.

“Second half we were up the slope and against the wind. It reminded me of Old Pats last year.

“We just couldn’t clear our lines properly.”

Despite the loss, Bolton does not expect to make many changes to the side, which has been bolstered by several new players, for the visit of Cleve to Braywick this afternoon (Saturday), kick-off 3pm.

He also admits his knowledge of the Bristol-based outfit is limited.

He said: “I don’t know much about Cleve, I don’t know a lot about them at all, and I have not seen any footage of them.

“But then we prefer to concentrate on what we’re doing anyway. But I’m looking forward to playing at home.

“We have a great record at home and that’s something we want to continue.”

Cleve began their campaign with a 45-12 win over Hornets.
