A young woman inspiring others with hearing impairments to follow their dreams without limitations is breaking down barriers as a deaf personal trainer at Langley Leisure Centre.

Faiza Awan from Slough was born deaf and faced societal misconceptions and challenges over her abilities through her life, which has an impact on her confidence and opportunities.

Like many deaf young people, the 27-year-old faced barriers while pursuing her education.

Faiza’s outlook on fitness and health was transformed in 2017 when she joined a gym in her previous workplace to undertake a journey of self-improvement.

Experiencing the benefits of regular exercise, including increased confidence and improved mental wellbeing, Faiza realised she could help others in achieving similar positive changes in their lives.

Faiza said: “I was bored in my previous job. I was working in an office and it wasn’t for me. I wanted to pursue a career that aligned with my passion for fitness, and I wanted to help others.

“I wasn’t sure how to get started but I was determined that being deaf wouldn’t stop me. I sought support from Slough Borough Council, my previous employer, to help connect me to Everyone Active and was eligible to receive the support of a BSL interpreter.”

Faiza’s career as a personal trainer started with her completing the entry level 2 gym instructor qualification in 2018 at Langley Leisure Centre which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Slough Borough Council.

She added: “I was so excited to get started on my qualifications. There were definitely points where I found things tough and I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to finish, but I pushed hard and successfully completed my level 3 certification in 2021, becoming a fully qualified personal trainer.

“I teach one-to-one personal training sessions, as well as group exercise classes like bootcamp, HIIT, and legs, bums and tums - some alone, and some with the support of my interpreters.

“I love helping people accomplish their goals and overcome their personal barriers toward leading a healthy lifestyle and enjoying fitness.”

Through her work Faiza is aiming to inspire other people with hearing impairments to follow their dreams without limitations.

“I believe that disabled people face barriers that stop them taking part in society in the same way as non-disabled people. However, fitness is for everyone, and I would love to see more deaf people engaging in physical activities, breaking stereotypes and achieving their dreams,” she said.

Faiza added: “Customers are understanding and accepting. People recognise that I am here to support and guide them on their fitness journey just like any other personal trainer.

“Communication barriers may exist, but the support and encouragement I receive from both clients and colleagues prove that inclusivity in fitness knows no boundaries.

“I am eager to extend an open invitation to the deaf community and everyone else who may have felt hesitant to try out personal training or join our gym. I want to reassure them that we’re committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.”

Sally Thomas-Ellis, regional contract manager at Everyone Active, said: "Society often underestimates the capabilities of individuals with disabilities. When Faiza approached us, we saw her determination and potential and we were delighted to give her the opportunity she deserved. Seeing her thrive as a personal trainer is incredibly rewarding for all of us.

“We are truly proud to have Faiza as part of our team and look forward to witnessing the positive changes she continues to bring to the lives of those she trains.”
