A refurbished leisure centre in Langley has welcomed more than 1.6million people since it opened five years ago this month.

It has been five years since operator Everyone Active began managing Langley Leisure Centre, in partnership with Slough Borough Council (SBC).

The leisure centre in Parlaunt Road was first built in 1997, and after closing for a year-long refurbishment in 2017, the new centre opened in June 2018.

As of this month, membership figures are 70 per cent higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Swimming lessons have also ‘more than doubled’ at Langley Leisure Centre, in comparison to before the pandemic.

The operator of the leisure centre has also reported a boost in demand for wellbeing and holistic classes, including yoga and Pilates.

Additionally, 35 to 44-year-olds are ‘the most common age group to attend the gym and fitness classes’.

In 2018, SBC invested more than £55million to regenerate the leisure facilities across Slough.

The refurbishments at Langley, included repairs to the roof, a single-storey gym extension ‘doubling its capacity’, new flooring and wall tiling for the changing village and swimming pool, a new ‘fit out of the dry changing rooms’, the replacement of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment, and a new pool filtration system.

In 2018, the car park was also extended, aiding in accommodating the increasing numbers attending the site.

Luke Routhorn, Everyone Active's contract manager, said: "Since the new facility opened in 2018, Langley Leisure Centre has gone from strength to strength and now welcomes more than 35,000 visitors each month.

“The impact of Covid-19 left people more conscious of both their physical health and mental wellbeing, so we’ve also seen an increased demand for classes focused on wellbeing, alongside the popular fitness classes.

"We’ve got exciting plans in December to enhance our fitness offering at Langley even more and look forward to sharing more detail in due course.

“We are really positive that we can keep growing our membership numbers and that the local community will continue to get the most out of this fantastic centre."

Iftakhar Ahmed, lead member for leisure, community cohesion, regulation, enforcement and planning, said: "I'm delighted to see the renewed interest in Langley Leisure Centre since the council invested into refurbishing it.

“Keeping fit and active, whether that's a gentle swim or a full on exercise class, is of great benefit to people's health. We hope they continue to enjoy the facilities."
