After being voted the happiest country in the world, more of us wish to live ‘Danishly,’ and want to adapt the country’s ‘hygge.’ This can be translated in English as ‘cosiness.’ We have spoken to our experts on what us Brits can do to embrace the Danish way of life, helping to brighten our spirits at this time of year….
Get cosy – to help make the long cold winter more bearable, why not embrace Hygge and make your home as cosy and inviting as possible. This means lots of soft blankets, fluffy cushions, warm textures and tactile fabrics. Make sure every sofa and chair has its own blanket to snuggle under. Soft lighting and candles add to this wonderful ambience - the perfect antidote to the frost filled air outside.
Host a gathering – there’s little more uplifting for the spirits than a giggle and a glass with your nearest and dearest. Once your home is winter ready, why not invite them over for a movie night, light supper or winter cocktail to pass the long chilly evenings together?
Firelight - an essential ingredient of any Hygge winter is a fire whether it’s gas or electric or even an open fire. If you are lucky enough to have a real fire or log burner, the crackle of the flames and the smell of burning pine cones is both soothing and relaxing.
Hot drinks – there’s nothing more comforting than a hot drink - the hug in a mug. Why not experiment with seasonal spices and create your own flavour of drink - add some to your usual favourite tipple or grab a bottle of mulled spice syrup to add to hot chocolate for an instant Scandinavian treat.
Bring the outdoors in – boughs of fir tree, bags of fresh pine cones and bright, poinsettias are all perfect ways to bring a little of the ‘evergreen’ outdoors in. A dining table centre piece can be quickly and easily pulled together with just a few simple additions and is also very simple to care for with little watering needed.
Carpet picnic – who says picnics are only for summer! Gather your favourite foods, warming winter drinks and one of your cosy blankets and enjoy a carpet picnic. No need to wrap up warm for the chilly outdoors either!
Play games – Christmas is, and should be, a time of togetherness. Use it as an opportunity to enjoy an IT detox and play favourite family games like Charades. To embrace the pure Scandi essence of Hyyge, opt for traditional wooden board games like chess or backgammon. Unplug from the world and get some important one on one time with those who matter most to you.
