Marlow's men beat Eastcote 2-1 but scrappy win wasn't for the hockey purists

Marlow men’s 1sts made it two wins from two in a scrappy encounter with Eastcote on Saturday.

The 2-1 win certainly wasn’t one for the purists, with Eastcote managing to disrupt Marlow’s flow without ever really creating anything of note themselves in the first period.

Eastcote took the lead from a corner, but this simply served to galvanise Marlow into action. New signing, and former Banbury player, Callum White converted twice from corners in the 45th and 50th minutes, and, despite the odd Eastcote counterattack, the points never looked in doubt from that moment on.

The men’s 2nds drew 4-4 at home with Harrow 1sts with Adam Boyden (two), Dan Field and Joe Hazelhurst on the scoresheet. The 2nd team looked capable of winning their first home game of the season but too often they were pegged back by their visitors.

Other results saw the 3rds beat West Hampstead 4ths 1-0 away, the 4ths beat Eastcote 4ths 6-1 at home, the 5ths beat Banbury 4ths 1-0 away and the 6ths drew 2-2 with Wycombe 6ths. The Strollers Veterans side were also 5-1 winners at home against Kenley.

Marlow Ladies 1sts finished their game at Eastbourne with only nine players but managed to take the three points thanks to a goal from Grace Kisbee.

After a slow start to the match Marlow began to show some ambition in the 10th minute when the earned a penalty corner from which Kisbee scored from next to the post. A fantastic double save then denied Marlow attacker Keira Foster from doubling the visitors lead. Eastbourne were very quick on the break but calm defensive play from Jo Cox made sure there was no way through for the hosts.

Marlow forced many more penalty corners before the final whistle, but they were unable to convert. The Eastbourne keeper saved a rocket of a shot from Jen Martin from one of them and thwarted the visitors with a save from a penalty stroke. A flurry of cards in the final minutes led to Marlow finishing the match with nine players, but the visitors held on comfortably.

The Ladies 2nds beat South Berks 1sts 3-2 at home with two goals from Victoria Allen and one from Milly Conibear. The 3rds drew 3-3 at home with Thame 1sts, the 4ths defeated Oxford Hawks 5ths 4-2 and the 5ths played on a goalless draw with Newbury and Thatcham 3rds. The 6ths won 6-1 at home against Newbury and Thatcham 5ths and the 7ths – in their first ever league game – were 3-2 winners at home against Iver & Burnham 1sts.
