Marlow Men’s 1sts ended the first half of the MBBO Regional 1 season on a high, by scrapping their way to a 3-2 victory over Ashford.
Overall it was a good performance against a tough side and the outcome was always in the balance, but Marlow managed to pick up three crucial points thanks to goals from Joe Gleeson, skipper Gary Goodman and Tom Gray.
For the next few weeks they’ll turn their attention to the indoor hockey league, where they’ll try to qualify for the national league competition.
Elsewhere the men’s 2nds won 2-1 at home against Harrow 1sts, a result which masks a mixed performance in which the hosts missed several opportunities.
After going 1-0 down to a penalty stroke in the first half, Tom Lilly slid in at the far post to equalise with a classy reverse stick finish. James Ashburner then celebrated his 18th birthday by latching onto a ball over the top and wrong-footing the keeper to seal the points.
The 3rds played well as they drew at home with Tring 1sts. The 4th team were beaten 2-1 away by Oxford 4ths and the 5ths were beaten 4-1 at home by Wallingford 3rds. The 6ths beat Eastcote 6 2-0 away while The Strollers were convincing 4-1 winners over Thames Valley Veterans at home.
For most of the ladies teams this was also the last game before breaking for Christmas.
The Ladies 1sts came from behind for an entertaining 5-4 win at Tulse Hill & Dulwich, Jane Smith scoring the winner. With 10 minutes to go they trailed 4-3 but managed to equalise before going on to net a late winner. It moves the side up to sixth in South Division 1.
The 2nds secured a vital 1-0 away win at Aylesbury Ladies, securing three points and cementing third place in Trysports Premier 1. The 3rds drew 3-3 away at Wallingford Ladies 2nds with Emma Pittaway, Levi Rijs and Maisie Horne scoring the goals. They go into the Christmas break seventh in the Premier 2 table.
The 4ths suffered a tough 4-0 defeat at home to Amersham & Chalfont Ladies 3rds while the 5ths bounced back from their defeat against Thame last weekend to thrash Abingdon 2nds 6-1. They comfortably sit second in Trysports Division 3. The 6ths continued their recent run of form by beating Wychwood Ladies 2nds 4-0. They sit top of Division 7.
