Hockey round-up: Stone rocks Reading with hat-trick for Marlow Men's 1sts on his debut

Marlow HC

Luke Stone netted a hat-trick on his first appearance as Marlow Men’s 1sts overcame Reading 3rds 4-3 in MBBO Regional 1.

All four of Marlow’s goals came from open play, with Dan Strange their other man to find the net, but they failed to deal with Reading’s short corner routine with all of the visitors’ goals coming from set plays.

Johnny Mee deflected home a last-minute equaliser as the men’s 2nds drew 3-3 with Reading 4ths this weekend. The 3rd team were beaten 2-1 at home by Ashford 2nds while the 4ths were 3-1 winners away at Ealing 1sts.

The 5ths strolled to a comfortable 2-0 home win over Amersham & Chalfont 3rds and the 6ths were equally impressive in beating Wycombe 6ths 3-0 away.

The Strollers veterans team came unstuck, however, losing 2-0 at Kenley.

The Ladies 1sts battled to a 1-1 draw against Surbiton 3rds on Saturday, with the 2nds moving top of the Trysport Premier League after beating Banbury 1s 4-1 at home.

The other ladies sides all enjoyed victories, with the 3rds beating Thame 1sts 2-1 away from home, the 5ths overcoming Aylesbury 2nds at home and the 6ths easing to a 3-0 home win over Oxford 8ths.

Windsor HC

Four second-half goals helped Windsor Ladies 1sts to a 4-1 win over Abingdon Ladies 1sts and stretched their winning streak to three matches.

A goalless first gave little warning of the entertainment which was to follow in the second half. Abingdon took the lead from a well-worked corner routine but Windsor responded well to conceding their first goal of the campaign.

In-form captain Freya Hayter galvanised her teammates with a low-hard strike that Mel Van Huffel deftly tucked beyond the keeper.  Hayter then netted the second with a slick, drag-flicked finish from a penalty corner. Her second, and the side’s third, saw her dribble past several defenders before beating the keeper with a clever reverse stick strike.

Hayter then capped off her player-of-the-match performance by creating the fourth, crossing with accuracy for Van Huffel to net her second in fine style.

Superior goal difference keeps the side on top of Trysports Division 1 ahead of their home match with Oxford University Ladies 3rds on Saturday.

The Ladies 2nd team were beaten 2-1 at home by Oxford Hawks Ladies 6ths, despite taking the lead through Lucy Smith’s goal.

They’ll feel they should have had the game wrapped up by half-time, but a swift counter-attack saw the Hawks level matters up in the second half.

Windsor continued to pile on the pressure but failed to find another chink in the Hawks’ armour and the visitors took full advantage of a controversial penalty corner awarded late in the game to steal all three points. On Saturday Windsor host Amersham & Chalfont Ladies 4ths.

Dev Marar netted a consolation goal as Windsor Men’s 1sts were drubbed 6-1 away by Oxford Hawks Men’s 4ths. They’ll host Oxford Men’s 3rds in MBBO Division 2 on Saturday.

The men’s 2nds played out a goalless draw with Wallingford Men’s 3rds in Division 5 and are set to visit Oxford OBU on Saturday.

The men’s 3rds fell under the Maidenhead Magicians’ spell on Saturday, losing 5-1.

They’ll host Wycombe Men’s 4ths in Division 6 this weekend.
