Brown left with mixed feelings after Maidenhead Men's 1sts slip from the summit

Chris Brown was left with mixed feelings after Maidenhead’s 2-2 draw at Sonning 1sts on Saturday, with the side slipping from the top of the table following the result.

PHC Chiswick, who thrashed Eastcote 4-1 on Saturday, nipped above them on goal difference ahead of what could well prove a season defining month in the title race.

Brown admits the side are facing some big tests, but doesn’t think their games against Marlow at home on Saturday, and away to Chiswick next weekend will determine whether they’re promoted or not.

There was an element of frustration at having been held by Sonning, but also relief, with Daniel Reid’s equaliser coming five minutes from time. Maids fell behind twice, despite being the dominant side and levelled through Aqeel Hussain’s fourth goal of the season in the first half. They’ll look to get back to winning ways when fifth placed Marlow visit Altwood School on Saturday (1.15pm push back).

Brown said:  “I think at the end we were relieved to come away with a draw, and some of the lads were pleased that we’d maintained our unbeaten run. But at the same time it’s two points dropped.

“Sonning are a good side who’ll surprise a few people at their place, but it wasn’t our best performance so we have mixed feelings really. We improved after the break and created many chances and hit the post a few times. It’s a wake up call for us ahead of some very big games.”

The next few games could determine whether they’re genuine promotion contenders or merely pretenders, but Brown knows nothing will be decided in November.

He said: “Marlow is a local derby but they’re also a very capable team who’ve started the season well. We then go away to Chiswick, who are top of the table and also play Oxford Hawks.

“It’s not right to call this a season defining month, because the season is a long one, but they’re very big tests. We won’t gain promotion in November but we’re looking to get better as the season goes on.”
