Molesey FC 1 – Windsor FC 0

Windsor’s dip in form continued as Molesey dug in for a narrow 1-0 win over the Royalists in Tuesday’s Combined Counties Division 1 league cup tie.

Garry Haylock made five changes from the side which went down to a late 2-1 defeat at Deportivo Galicia on Saturday, as Tommy Dymott came in to replace 16-year-old Leighton Rudd in goal and Allesandro Pelliccia and Georg Gudjohnsen both dropped out of the squad with injuries.

The game was always likely to be a frenetic affair, with Windsor attempting to press Molesey into errors from the off. And they largely had the better of the contest, forcing 14 corners to their hosts’ four, however, the Moles grabbed the game’s only goal in the 39th minute when Will Smith was adjudged to have fouled Deji Abeli and Jack Williamson scored from the penalty spot.

The second half continued in the same vein with Windsor guilty of squandering chances through Liam Jenkins and Jamie Watson when a little more composure would surely have resulted in a leveller.

Equally, Windsor were also indebted to Dymott for a brilliant save in the 73rd minute, the keeper pushing Abeli’s shot around the post when it seemed certain Molesey would score and take a stranglehold on the tie.

Windsor did manage to force the ball into the net in injury-time, when Kevin Wheller in the Molesey goal dropped the ball from yet another corner, with Sam Healey poking home in the resulting melee. However, referee George Dobbie made the controversial call to disallow the goal.

There was also a lighter comedy moment, when a cat sat close to the corner flag and had to be gently ushered off the field by Molesey’s Jo Garcia to allow the game to resume.

Windsor Team: Dymott, Jenkins, Al-Shubasi, Kambamba, Peapell, Inman, Watson, Smith, Green, Rand- Brade, White -Glean. Subs: Matani, Supernak, Healey, Miller-Talaste, Rudd.
