Maidenhead United Futsal continues to enjoy an excellent first season since the club formerly known as Reading Royals rebranded to fall under the MUFC umbrella.

Futsal is a five-a-side game, normally played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey-sized goals and a size-four ball with a reduced bounce. It is played to touchlines, meaning there are no rebound boards or walls. All players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head height. Games are 20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock (similar to basketball) with time-outs permitted.

Last weekend, United’s women hosted a prestige friendly at Bradfield College last Saturday evening against the GB Deaf Futsal team, who are preparing for their forthcoming world championships. The GB team won the encounter by 6 goals to 2, with Sophia Richardson-Hughes and Isobel Saunders scoring for United.

Magpies Sarah Thompson – who is also a regular feature for Maidenhead United Women in the FA Women’s National League in the 11-a-side discipline - reflected: “Saturday's game was a brilliant opportunity for us to play a national level team.

“The timing of the game was ideal with two big games against Genesis to prepare for.

“Despite starting the game well in the first half, unfortunately we were below the mark in the second half and the GB Deaf squad capitalised on our mistakes, which the scoreline reflects. We were glad to get two goals on the score sheet but ultimately the performance wasn't up to standards from our side.

“Credit to the Deaf squad who were well drilled and worked collaboratively together throughout.”

United’s women are currently in second place in the National Futsal Series Tier 2 South, whilst the men are also enjoying a fine season in their first ever campaign in Tier 1.

They are placed fifth out of nine teams in their division and recently defeated previously unbeaten Bloomsbury in the quarter-final of the League Cup.
