A first half hat-trick from academy graduate Christian Johnson steered Maidenhead United into the fourth round of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup on Tuesday evening at the expense of Didcot Town.

Johnson – who came off the bench to make his Magpies’ debut in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Oxford United – was handed his first start on Tuesday and repaid his manager’s faith handsomely.

United didn’t have things all their own way against Didcot, and fell behind shortly after the half-hour mark, however, three goals in the space of little over 10 minutes from Johnson put the Magpies on course for the fourth round. His third, on the stroke of half-time, came from the penalty spot.

The Southern League Premier Division South side made a fist of things in the second period, pulling a goal back in the 55th minute, but goals from Harry Parsons and Charlee Adams in the 75th and 78th minute rounded off a satisfactory night’s work for Alan Devonshire’s side.

United are one of the first teams through to the fourth round and join the competition’s big-hitters Milton Keynes, Reading and Wycombe Wanderers who all got byes through this stage. Ascot United are also through after being handed a walkover win at home to Chesham United.

The remaining third round ties will take place later this month, with in-form Flackwell Heath at home to Slough Town in one of the ties of the round. That’s one of several ties set for Tuesday, November 28. Also, that night, Marlow will host Berks County and Aylesbury United are at home to Milton United. The night before (November 27), Beaconsfield Town are due to host Bracknell Town in another intriguing tie.

Burnham’s reward for their 3-1 win over Holyport last month is a home game with Milton Keynes Irish on Wednesday, November 29, while dates for Winslow United/Buckingham FC’s home game with Risborough Rangers and Thatcham Town vs Reading City are yet to be confirmed. Hungerford Town will welcome Binfield to Bulpit Lane on Tuesday, November 21.
