Dagenham & Redbridge have provided an update on their striker Inih Effiong after he collapsed on the pitch following the Daggers’ 1-0 defeat at Maidenhead United this afternoon (Saturday).

The medical emergency occurred in the aftermath of the final whistle at York Road, as Maidenhead’s players celebrated the 1-0 win given to them by Reece Smith’s 58th minute strike.

A concerned hush quickly descended around the ground as the player was treated by medical staff from both teams. An ambulance was called, and paramedics continued to treat the striker on the pitch before he was taken to hospital.

This evening, Dagenham released a statement regarding the incident. It read: “Following the final whistle today, Inih Effiong was treated on the pitch by the physios and medical staff.

“He is currently in hospital for observation and is in a stable condition. We will provide further updates when we have them.

“At this moment in time we would like to request privacy for Inih and his family.”

Following the final whistle, Maidenhead United’s assistant manager Ryan Peters said: “All football related matters get put to one side.

“We’re hoping that he makes a full recovery. It looked horrible and it puts things into perspective when you see things like that.

“My mind went straight to his kids and family, and I hope he makes a full recovery. Hopefully, that will be highlighted as quickly as possible so we can put our minds to rest. Our thoughts are with him.”

The club also responded to Dagenham’s statement this evening, saying: All at Maidenhead United send our best wishes to Inih and all at Dagenham & Redbridge.”
