Central defender Kevin Lokko said he’s feeling fit and strong after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with AFC Fylde at York Road, however, he admitted afterwards it will take him a few games to get fully up to speed. Despite this, he doesn’t think it will be too long before he and his teammates start putting wins on the board.
Lokko was inches away from a goal on his debut, as he lurched forwards to get a touch on Charlee Adams’ brilliant freekick in the 19th minute. However, although he failed to get a touch, his presence was enough to make Emeka Obi stretch for the ball and turn it into his own net.
That put the Magpies 2-0 to the good on the opening afternoon and the home side were lively on the break and hungry for more goals. However, Fylde were equally adept as an attacking unit and the good shape that Lokko and his fellow defenders held together in the first half hour was gradually stretched at the seams.
Goals from Nicolas Haughton in the first half and Alex Whitmore in the 90th minute earned the visitors a deserved point and, while Lokko was disappointed to concede a second so late in the game, he’s said the squad would look to build on their hard-earned point at Dorking Wanderers this weekend.
“We started well,” Lokko told the Advertiser’s Jade Kidd after the game. “We had good shape and did well on the counterattack. We maybe lost our way a little bit towards the end of the first half, but we did well to come in 2-1 up.
“Later in the second half, it was quite disappointing to lose that goal. There’s stuff to do but we’ve got to build on it. It’s a point at home and we push on for next Saturday.
“We’ll take a draw. I didn’t like the way we conceded late on, but we push on and it’s a point on the board.”
On his own fitness and form – as well as that of his teammates – Lokko added: “It’s very early on in the season. There are always relationships that have got to be built with certain players and knowing their positions.
“That will come but I’m feeling positive, and I think it will be a matter of time before we get wins on the board and we push on up the league. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling strong. It will take two or three games until I’m fully up to match speed but I’m feeling good, and I thought the lads looked fit out there.
“We’ll try to set up well (at Dorking) and try to show what we’ve shown today in glimpses.”
