Pupils, parents and staff at a primary school in Cookham Dean are celebrating after the school was awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation with Merit.

The accolade recognises the efforts of pupils at Cookham Dean CE Primary School to promote sustainability and raise environmental awareness amongst the school and wider community.

The school has a pupil-led eco committee called Eco Warriors, which has embraced the Eco-Schools’ seven-step framework to champion good environmental behaviours and progress their school’s sustainability journey.

The committee started by reviewing their school environment and curriculum from an environmental point-of-view.

They then worked together to produce a detailed year-long action plan to drive meaningful change.

The action plan focused on three key areas, including global citizenship, biodiversity and marine.

The committee conducted a range of initiatives to address these priorities, including fundraising for wildlife and marine conservation charities, spreading the message to protect oceans, designing and creating an art mural for the playground climbing wall at the school, and participating in Cut Your Carbon in November last year.

Heather Gunn, parent and Eco Warrior lead, said: “We are so proud of our Eco Warriors, for their infectious enthusiasm, their dedication, creativity and leadership in sustainability.

“This award is a testament to that hard work and the strength of our shared commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural world."

Adam Flint, Eco-Schools England manager, said: "Every year, we are amazed by the incredible efforts of young people working together to create a better future for all.

“Their collective impact is truly remarkable.

"If everyone approached the climate crisis with the same level of passion and determination, we could resolve it much faster and make it a problem of the past.

“At Keep Britain Tidy, we are delighted to recognise their achievements with the Eco-Schools Green Flag."
